Michael G. Nelson

The Howard W. Eavenson Award is presented to Michael G. Nelson "for his contributions to coal mining and processing, in mining machine automation, mine ventilation, ground control, and mine health and safety.

Nelson is professor of mining engineering and chair of the Mining Engineering Department at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT. He was previously professor of mining engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He holds a B.S. degree in metallurgical engineering and an M.S. in physics from the University of Utah. He earned a Ph.D. in mining engineering from West Virginia University. He holds nine patents and is the author of many technical publications. He has given invited short courses in the United States, Chile, Australia and India, has served as an expert witness in legal proceedings in the United States and Australia, and has consulted widely.
