Department Application Requirements

The Department of Mining Engineering requries that the following items be attached to your online application:

Statement of Purpose: A brief statement outlining your academic goals, research & career interests and any additional information that might help in the evaluation of your application.

GPA Requirement: Applicants must meet the minimum University requirements, namely, undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, based on all undergraduate work, and a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

Official Transcript: Request one official transcript from each college and/or University attended, regardless of length of attendance.  This may be uploaded to the online system.  Original transcripts will be required by mail or in-person at the time of admission if admitted.

Three Letters of Recommendation: Request letters from 3 people who can evaluate the applicant's academic ablility and promise as a graduate student.  Endorsers should be either from the applicants academic program or a former employer in the mining industry.

Graduate Record Exam GRE: This exam is required for Ph.D. applicants. Please have the official score sent directly to the University of Utah indicating Mining Engineering as the Department Code. There is not a minimum required score on the GRE. The test result is used as a tool in evaluating the application. The GRE test is not required for M.S. applicants.

 

English Proficiency 

All international applicants to the University of Utah must provide proof of English proficiency. The TOEFL and IELTS exams are the approved english proficiency exams for admission to a Mining Engineering Graduate Program. 

A.  TOEFL – A minimum score of 80 iBT (550 pBT) or better  for  applicants whose first language is not English (Minimum TOEFL requirement subject to change).
